OYM Day 23 : Keep It Light

Do you ever make it a point to keep things light? You’re having a bad day and you decide…you know what? I’m going to put on fuzzy pajamas, watch a comedy on TV, and keep it light!

Do you? It doesn’t work, does it.

No Mal Part 2 will come tomorrow. Today I need to keep it light. Today…a day dedicated to women, mothers. People who grow, nurture, and push out of the nest when the time comes. Mothers and our relationships with mothers are complex. So are fathers. We have a day for them, too. If you spend both days celebrating, consider yourself an anomaly.

We dedicate a day in the year to either praise our loved one or retreat into our shells with a bottle of booze to mourn. Sometimes we do both in the same day.

It’s like we set aside a day every year to think of how blessed we are or how fucked up we’ve become. Like if we didn’t have this special day, perhaps we could have healed by now, but instead we open the wound on an annual basis.

Just keeping it light, guys!

It doesn’t work. The second you tell yourself you’re going to keep things light, it’s like committing to spending the next handful of hours questioning every decision you’ve ever made.

The only way I know how to take my mind off of things is to have something even worse happen, so all of my attention can transfer from one car wreck to another, bigger car wreck.

And sometimes, by the end of the day, it’s like I can turn around and see a 20 car pile up. Then I’ll reflect on that. What a mess.

But you know me, just keeping it light.
